Dubai Umm Suqeim Street set for Massive $90 Million Transformation To Ease Traffic

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has announced the significant award of a contract for the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project, in alignment with the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

With a budget of AED 332 million, the project aims to bolster the city's road network infrastructure to accommodate ongoing urban expansion and ensure seamless traffic flow. Encompassing a 4.6-kilometre stretch from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, the initiative will involve various upgrades, according to the authority's statement.

A tunnel is set to be constructed on Umm Suqeim Street in Dubai.

Furthermore, a tunnel stretching 800 meters will be erected on Umm Suqeim Street, near Kings School, with four lanes in each direction. Additionally, a signalized surface intersection is planned as an integral component of the project. According to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project holds paramount importance in enhancing connectivity between east-west and north-south streets.

Al Tayer emphasized the project's role in complementing the RTA's ongoing endeavors to enhance the corridor's efficiency. He stated, "This project aims to enhance the connectivity of four major traffic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road." He added that the project would increase street capacity to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensuring smoother traffic flow and significantly reducing travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes.

The project is expected to benefit various residential and developmental areas, including Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills, collectively hosting an estimated population of about two million people. The Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project builds upon previously completed initiatives in the region.

In 2013, the RTA expanded Umm Suqeim Street from the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road to the intersection of Al Khail Road. This phase included the construction of two bridges, each featuring three lanes in both directions and three pedestrian bridges to enhance accessibility between Al Quoz and Al Barsha.

Furthermore, in 2020, the RTA inaugurated a central 500-meter bridge as part of the Bridges and Roads leading to the Dubai Hills Mall Project. Situated at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and the entrances of Dubai Hills and Al Barsha areas, the bridge boasts four lanes in each direction and can handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
